AUTHOR’S INTRODUCTION

Most of these photographs were taken the between 1978 and 1982, a few were taken in the late 1980’s and early 90’s, all with 35 mm film. The last photo was taken in 2007 with a digital camera. As I look back on the photos, I know that many of the objects and places recorded here have disappeared and are gone forever. Some, of course, still exist, but all represent a past, an archeological remnant of American civilization before the digital age.

Traveling through the back roads of Connecticut and New Jersey, I sought out the abandoned, the rusted, the ruins, the outmoded and outdated, the discarded and forgotten. I liked to imagine I was an archeologist who had stumbled on a lost civilization. These were artifacts from the past. Some of these artifacts were hidden and forgotten; some were in plain sight or just around the corner, behind the barn, or off the main roads. But all of them spoke to me, asking me to photograph and keep a record of their existence before they disappeared forever from the physical world.
