Your university admission form is due,
But you’re stuck on whether to tick the
M or F boxes under the gender section.
Marking either box feels like
Choosing a coma over death.
So you trudge to the lavatory
To freshen up and take a
Long, sharp & hard look
At your reflection only
For the mirror to cleave,
With each piece bearing
Your broken image.
Coming back, you hand over the form.
Later you learn that you’ve missed on
A place because there’s no slot for two.
KC Manuel is an emerging Kenyan poet and writer, and student at Kibabii University. His works have appeared in The Kalahari Review and Kreative Diadem. His piece, “The Rough Ride Home”, was shortlisted for the Igby Prize for Nonfiction. More than anything else, he reveres moonlit nights and twilights. If he’s not writing, he’s thinking about what to write next.
