GONG

inspired by, and with phrases from, Oluwafemi Babasola’s poem “Gongs

I came, I saw but have I conquered
the conquest that is wrapped with fear?

I have returned victorious from battle.
I am asking myself a sincere question.
I have a need I believe should be met inside of me,

this inner yearning for peace
that I cannot seem to run from.

I came, I saw but have I conquered
the conquest that is wrapped with fear?

Is my battlefield confidence only a covering
over a deeper inner fear? I have been in war
since childhood, then the victim, now the victor.
What I have experienced has justified
my growing up to become a warrior.

I came, I saw but have I conquered
the conquest that is wrapped with fear?

Are there no better ways to get things done
other than this way? I want peace, definitely.
But I am considering my reputation now
among my people. Won’t they feel I’m just

nothing but a coward? Won’t they feel helpless?
Won’t they feel…a myriad of questions
crowd me. Should I really summon
my rainbows and unsend my floods?

I came, I saw but have I conquered
the conquest that is wrapped with fear?

I am in a dilemma, winning each battle
to lose the war. Am I willing to relinquish

my boldness in search of peace? Should I
pursue my own peace boldly or continue

to be courageous and bold by the world’s
standards? Should I really summon
my rainbows and unsend my floods?

I came, I saw but have I conquered
the conquest that is wrapped with fear?
