"Looking" - photograph by Carl Scharwath, from his photography chapbook HIRAETH

Hiraeth

Some years ago
When bones and shackles were one
And life drained down to clogged canals
The detritus of could have beens
And should have beens
Float away down stream
Stuck now in the crucifix of routines
And fatality of passing time
Debt owed and renewed
Yet still, every supplication
Is invested in our chance meeting
Perhaps we can live again in that brief moment
And die too
