The End of The Mule

She wakes up with voices on the side of her bed.
Somewhere a desert crosses a mule,
and an unfinished fence circles its requiem.

The voices try to sane her, and her head
spreads hot, fine, sandy, hushed and shhh.
Its geography is a condition.

Who goes there?
Where do you hide your gun?
Let’s do a cavity check.

An owl proclaims midnight right.
The mouse outside has a life to shorten.
She wakes up to draw a powder line.
