The Gospel According to My Mother’s Depression

Grief is the mother of voyages”
– Romeo Oriogun

after it is over, I will look at my mother’s ruined body
& praise it for not giving up

& this poem began with Ed Sheeran’s ‘save myself’ being played
from mother’s mouth

society says depression can be both the happiness and sadness
in a woman’s eyes

or the smile that died on mother’s face every time she
stared into fog on the bathroom mirror.

where depression begins, is where one’s life …. & mother loses her voice
while trying to survive outside the obituary section of
her favorite newspaper.

breathing doesn’t means living when the body is full

sad songs played themselves in a mouth but it’s the sun that
refuses to rest when night arrives.
