boxing class

boxing class
we all high five
after class
‘good fight’

boxing class
our gloves
high five
‘good punches’
the other student says
  you too’
I say
as we each disappear
into our respective locker rooms

to the boxing coach:
‘can i have your card?’
‘if i punch someone
i want to call you right away’
the old, black, strong, tough, kind coach:
‘sure, here’

after boxing class
students gather around the teacher
i reaffirm:
‘so just one good punch in the nose,
are you sure?’
‘yes!’  the teacher and all the other male students
say quickly and emphatically to me:
‘just one good punch,
then a kick in the groin
and run’
some of the most wise and simple words
I will ever use

old time L.A. boxer
in the pros
back in the day
black and sweet and gentle
solid, tough, strong
hands of steel
now he teaches
in the martial arts studio I go to
he shows me some moves
talks about boxing
and the good old days
as the kids class is letting out
he points to a small blonde six year old girl
coming down the steps with her dad
‘see her?’ he says, serious and focused
‘see that little girl right there?
‘now she’s a fighter’

  1. A Pacific (but still PACIFISTIC) knockout, showing the nobility and spirituality of an ancient
athletic art form! The poetry helps us all to be there!
