Woman is a word said at times in derogation. For some, a woman is a different animal, alien. The world has had its way with othering women, hiding them in the duties of mother, of wife, of seductress, the one with sin. There are even memes and quotes that state that the word woman means woe to man. Religions all over the world determine woman as second class, subservient, silent, unseen, in the presence of men. Is this what it means to be a woman?

Over the years, women have fought to speak, to function, to be seen in the society, the communities, that they have built on their backs. The International Women’s Day celebration is one of the platforms through which their message can be heard. Praxis Magazine Online is proud to be a part of the amplification of their voices.

In celebration of the day of the woman, Praxis Magazine Online is calling for submissions from all over the world in poetry, short story, creative nonfiction, art and photography.

It is our intent to curate works that explore what is means to be, to live, to love a woman. We want your truth, the lies you tell yourself; your pain, your fears, your courage, your triumphs, etc. Let your work be brave enough to question stereotypes, to upend assumptions, to demand space.

Submission Guidelines

We are accepting electronic submissions via halima@praxismagonline.com

The subject of the submission should read ‘Title of work/genre’. For example, ‘The woman is god/poetry’. The submission should be attached as a Word document.

No identifying details should appear on any part of the attached manuscript. We read blind. Please include a bio statement of no more than 100 words in your cover letter email, but do not include your name or bio in the attachment.

For poetry: submit no more than 3 poems in a single document. Each poem should begin on a new page, and should not include any indentations (all lines must begin at the left margin).

Format: use a legible font. We prefer New Times Roman. Font size: 12 and single spaced.

Short story and creative nonfiction: Send only one short story or nonfiction piece. The submission should be double spaced using the same font requirement as stated in the poetry section above. Word count should be no more than 1500 words minus the title of the work.

Photography and Art: Send up to five jpg images, maximum size of 1MB per image, and include the titles of the images in your email along with your bio statement.

Please note that multiple submissions will not be acknowledged.
