I’D LIKE TO THINK I CAN FLY TO FREEDOM
after Romeo Oriogun
Thou shalt not kill
But I’ve seen hands quick to set flowery boys ablaze
While holding the scriptures on their tongue
I fold myself into a whisper
& disappear into the wind
To dance in the midst of flowers
God is Love they say
& I have Love burning in my heart
Is it safe to say God is burning in my heart?
Can God endear me to a boy?
Can God endear a boy to another boy?
Maybe the answer lies in the waters
I close my eyes and try to walk on water
I try to keep my eyes on the boy I love
But there’s a fog of people hiding him from me
Day by day I give myself to the ocean
Looking for a quench in the ocean’s drops
God is Love they say
& I have Love burning in my heart
But aren’t ashes dead men flying to freedom?
